How to Make Your Product Stand Out on the Shelves

Your packaging design is one of the most important part of sales as it will make your product stand out. Additionally, the design will effectively communicate to the customers what your product is about and why they should choose it, driving sales. Since everyone wants their product to stand out on the shelves, you will be up against some tough competition, but you can achieve your goal with the following strategies.

Make Good Use of Color

Start off by making good use of color in your packaging. Your color should match your brand’s color scheme and convey what you want from your packaging. Each color has its own associations that are used in packaging and marketing in general. Black, for example, is associated with elegance and luxury products while red is frequently used for clearance. Do a little research to see which color your product should use to stand out and tell your customers about your product, even if it is subconsciously.

Know Your Market

As with any other type of marketing, you must know your target market in order to stand out from the crowd and get sales. Keep in mind that a product that tries to appeal to everyone all at once will likely appeal to no one. Instead, identify your target market then use elements that will appeal to that particular market. Customers decide whether they will buy your product or a competitor’s based on how well it seems to target their needs. Repurchase decisions are then based on packaging appearance as well as the actual product and its appearance.

Size Your Packaging Appropriately

As you evaluate how to make your product stand out on the shelves, remember to consider size as well. Essentially, you do not want your packaging to be so small that it gets lost among the competition and does not make an impression. At the same time, you do not want it to be so large that fewer products fit on your allotted shelf space or customers will not want the item taking up the space in their auto or home. Standard sizes are usually the best choice, assuming they work for your product, as this will improve flexibility on shipping pallets and reduce production costs.

Know What to Avoid

Finally, be aware of the packaging trends that are leaving this year and that will turn away potential customers instead of bringing them in. Avoid things such as hyper-masculine packaging, over-cluttered designs, wasteful or excessive packaging materials, small typography, and even familiar typography. While these trends previously had positive results at bringing in customers, that is no longer the case; as the packaging world changes and so do consumer demands.

Instead of hyper-masculine packaging, aim to create a product packaging that can appeal to either gender, unless your product is specifically targeted to one. Instead of overusing packaging material to the point of waste, see if you can reduce materials without sacrificing product safety during transport. You will save money and improve your impression with customers.
