With the growing awareness of the negative impact people have on the planet, many companies are starting to incorporate recycled and recyclable materials into their packaging. This not only helps the planet, but it can also help boost sales if consumers are aware of your use of recycled materials. After all, many people today want to make small changes to reduce their impact on the planet, and opting for a product with recycled packaging over one without it is a simple swap. But how do you incorporate recycled material into your packaging?
Choosing Recycled Paper and Board
If you use paper or board in your product packaging, then you will find it easy to swap those items out for recycled versions. It is not hard at all to find corrugated packaging, paper, and board with recycled materials. You may not be able to find, or have the budget for, fully recycled materials, but opt for the highest percentage of recycled materials as you can.
Those who currently use plastic should see if you can swap that material out with recycled paper or board. With food products, for example, laminated carton-board that has been recycled is a good alternative for plastic. Just make certain that your chosen material is tested to ensure there is no metal contamination if you sell food.
Choosing Recycled Glass
Like paper and board, it should not be too challenging to find recycled glass. Best of all, the glass will also be recyclable. Depending on the location of your product packaging manufacturing plant, the color of glass with the highest recycled content will vary. Whenever possible, opt for the color with the best percentage. You can adjust this somewhat with organic coatings that do not impact recyclability.
Choosing Recycled Plastic
It is generally best to avoid plastic in your packaging if you can, but if it is unavoidable, opt for recycled plastic. Further this by minimizing the amount of plastic that you use. In addition, do what you can to find another purpose for any production waste that comes from your plastic. The less that ends up in a landfill, the better.
Choosing Recycled Stuffing Materials
One of the biggest issues with incorporating recycled materials is trying to figure out how to stuff your packaging, so items do not move around. Styrofoam is common, as is plastic, but neither is recyclable. Ask your packaging manufacturer about recycled stuffing materials. You will be surprised at what is available. For example, there is bubble wrap of varying sizes made from recycled materials. Some of those are even recyclable. Or you can opt for paper-based fillings that are made from recycled materials and are also recyclable.
Complement your use of recycled materials by making an effort to ensure the packaging is recyclable. From boxes without glue to simply choosing materials wisely, there are numerous ways to do so. Do not forget to encourage your customers to recycle as well. This is best done via a small reminder on your packaging to let them know it is recyclable.
